Little Journeys to the homes of big industries — Hoffmann-Hayman, San Antonio Light, 10 Dec 1922

A San Antonio Light “Little Journeys to the Homes of Big Industries” feature on 10 December 1922 (page 20): a photo spread and article on the Hoffmann-Hayman Coffee Company (plant at 307 North Medina Street in the copy), with G. P. Menger (president and manager) and R. W. Menger (secretary and treasurer) running the firm after the 1912 death of W. R. Hoffmann and the 1920 retirement of W. E. Hayman. The article reports H & H sold by more than 90 percent of San Antonio grocers (~700 groceries) and “practically all grocers in every town within a hundred mile radius,” with the product line named only as coffee, tea, spices, extracts, and cocoa — no sub-brand other than “H & H” is mentioned by name. The page ends with a color contest built around a line art H and H BLEND COFFEE tin, cash prizes (1st–6th + next 15), and a mail-in stub to the Contest Editor, San Antonio Light.

Little Journeys to the Homes of Big Industries
Another concern that is doing much toward making San Antonio a large manufacturing center is the Hoffmann Hayman Coffee Company, 307 North Medina street. Managers of this company say they “roast their ‘H & H’ coffee and others praise it.” G. P. Menger and R. W. Menger were made managers of the concern soon after the death of W. R. Hoffmann and the retirement of W. E. Hayman. This coffee is retailed by more than 90 per cent of the grocers of the city which amounts to approximately 700 groceries.
During the last several years of existence “H & H” has made wonderful strides toward being the best known and liked coffee by the retail dealer and the housewife. Guesswork in the roasting of this product does not exist and when the coffee comes out of the factory a finished product it is such a well balanced blend that it has gained a reputation as one of the best brands of coffee on the market in Texas.
Coffee, tea, spices, extracts and cocoa are sold by the Hoffmann Hayman Company. A large supply of green coffee is kept in stock at all times and the roasting machines are kept in operation continually in order to supply the increasing demand. Mr. Menger says that business has been better this summer than it ever has been since “H & H” was placed on the market.
Not only do 90 per cent of the grocers of the city sell Hoffmann Hayman products but practically all grocers in every town within a hundred mile radius sell it.
Mr. Hoffmann died ten years ago and business was continued under Mr. Hayman’s management. Two years ago Mr. Hayman retired and left the management to the Menger boys. R. W. Menger is secretary and treasurer, and G. P. Menger, president and manager, Mrs. William Schlosser is vice president.
“We roast it and others praise it” four hours afterward, Mr. Menger says.
