The Hoffmann-Hayman Coffee Company of this city, roasters and blenders of the three popular flavors of high-grade coffees, H & H, Sam Houston and Texas Girl, report a considerable increase in sales during October.
The prize contest on their products conducted during this month in which thousands participated from this city and all sections of the state resulted in the following winners:
H & H Contest: First prize, Miss Stella Masch, 619 Dallas Street, city; second prize, Emanuel Tuminson, Lampasas, Tex.; third prize, Mrs. Ed. T. Harker, 1385 West Huisache, city.
Sam Houston Contest: First prize, Mrs. Perry Post, 1021 West Agarita, city; second prize, Ethel Brindgill, 625 McCulough, city; third prize, Miss J. B. Severston, 1506 West Rosewood, city.
Texas Girl Contest: First prize, Mrs. Milly Simon, 305 Brooklyn, city; second prize, Mrs. Alb. Hoog, Castrovil, Tex.; third prize, Mrs. H. J. Phillips, 326 Cornell, city.
In addition there were 37 Drip-alator prizes and 491 other awards distributed in all sections of the city and various points in the state.
The Hoffmann-Hayman Coffee Company states that the contest will be continued during November and invites your participation. The nine cash awards, totaling $150, 30 Dripalators and 500 other prizes, will continue to attract many entries during this month. All grocers have entry blanks and the rules are simple. Just buy a pound of H & H Coffee, write a 25-word letter on ‘Why I Prefer H & H Coffee,’ attach the label, and mail it to the H & H Contest Editor, Hoffmann-Hayman Coffee Company, San Antonio, Tex. Or buy Sam Houston Coffee, write a 10-word slogan, attach label and mail it; or buy Texas Girl Coffee, and fill out the last line of a simple jingle.
All entries must be accompanied by entry blanks which can be secured from your grocer. Judges will be a committee of advertising men; all entries remain the property of the H & H Coffee Company. Decision of judges will be final, and duplicate prizes will be awarded in case of tie.
The popularity of H & H Coffee in the glass jar, vacuum-packed, continues to increase, and its sponsors claim for it the best value they have to offer, due to the superior quality of the product, the redemption value of the jars and their re-use value for preserving, storing, etc.
“much thought been given to gift wrapping,” remarked Mr. Sien. “This was doubtless due to the fact that the attractive items for this purpose were not available. But this is no longer the case. The factory of one of the largest manufacturers of gift wrappings has been in operation day and night for the past three months to supply the demand for these items.
“Mr. Del E. Newton, who is secretary-treasurer and sales manager of our company, recently returned from attending the national convention of the National Paper Trade Association at Chicago, and while he visited this great factory, he was amazed at the large orders for Christmas wrapping supplies that were pouring in from all parts of the country. A volume that would tax the factory to capacity to have the orders ready before the holiday season began.
“The Shiner-Sien Paper company is interested in the sale of this merchandise as it gives them an opportunity to be of further service to their many customers,” stated Mr. Sien. “We have a complete, attractive display in our showrooms of these Christmas items and are prepared to take care of purchases right up to Christmas time.”
Gay Wrappings Make Xmas Gifts More Attractive and Thrilling
“Because of generally improved business conditions, merchants are planning on a better holiday business this year than they have had for several years,” Mr. A. C. Sien, vice president and general manager of the Shiner-Sien Paper company, stated in a recent interview. “And a public less weighted by economic troubles is more apt to be in tune with the holiday spirit. This means that many thousands of dollars will be spent for Christmas gifts for the family, friends, and business associates.
“But,” continued Mr. Sien, “even though the present is very lovely and expensive, it can be made more thrilling and be given a touch of holiday splendor if it is transformed by gay wrappings and brilliant tieings. This is especially true of the practical, useful sort of gifts which have come into great popularity during recent years.
“Show that you have not only selected gifts carefully but have given thoughtful attention to the manner of presenting them by putting your gifts in modernistic boxes, adding a bright wrap of white or colored tissue in an attractive Christmas design, covering it with beautiful cellophane in either plain or holiday design, and tying it with a smart cellophane ribbon. This inexpensive addition adds glamour to a gift. And if the gift is to be mailed, it should also be wrapped with heavy paper and properly tied with strong cord so that it will be delivered in first-class condition.
