Wilhelmina “Minnie” Menger Hoffmann — International Women’s Day

At the end of 1910, Wilhelmina Hoffmann gave birth to her first son, William Hoffmann, Jr. He died within a month, January 1911. Less than a year later, her husband William R. died at the age of 34.

Twenty years later, in 1932, Wilhelmina “Minnie” Menger Hoffmann and her two brothers built a modern coffee factory on the east side of San Antonio, TX.

A black-and-white photograph of the Hoffmann-Hayman Coffee Co. factory not long after it was built: a two-story white stucco box with “HOFFMANN HAYMAN COFFEE CO” lettered across the front wall, rows of industrial multi-pane sash windows, and a stepped Mission-revival parapet running the length of the roofline. Three figures stand on the covered side entry at right, beside a chain-link gate carrying a small “H-H” sign. Freshly planted shrubs line the façade and the road out front is still raw dirt.
